The difference between aviation obstruction lights and aviation warning lights?

Are aviation obstruction lights and aviation warning lights the same? Are there any differences?

Aviation obstruction lights and aviation warning lights are the same, they are different names for the same kind of lamps. Aviation warning lights are another name for aviation obstruction lights. They all refer to the function of installing on obstacles and providing aviation warnings, so they are also called aviation warning lights.

Aviation warning lights mainly use light to assist aviation pilots in flying safely. With the gradual opening of domestic airspace, there will be more and more private jets or helicopters, and the role of aviation obstruction lights will become more and more important. By marking the visible width and height of the obstacle, the overall outline of the obstacle is marked to guide the safe flight of the aircraft

What are the characteristics of different aviation obstruction lights?

Aviation obstruction lights can be divided into low-intensity aviation obstruction lights, medium-intensity aviation obstruction lights and high-intensity aviation obstruction lights according to the installation height. According to the 2015 "People's Republic of China Civil Aviation Industry Standard MH/T 6012-2015" on aviation obstruction lights, it strictly requires the relevant characteristics of different aviation obstruction lights.

All aviation obstruction lights must meet the requirements of Table 4:

Aviation obstruction light installation characteristics

1. Low intensity obstruction lights

The characteristics of low-intensity obstruction lights should meet the requirements of Table 4 and Table 5. The horizontal beam spread angle of low-intensity obstruction lights is 360°.

The mechanical interface for the edge or bottom installation of Type A and Type B low-intensity obstruction lights should be G3/4 cylindrical pipe thread or G1 cylindrical pipe thread.

Low-intensity aviation obstruction light characteristics

2. Medium intensity obstruction lights

The characteristics of medium intensity obstruction lights should meet the requirements of Table 4 and Table 6. The horizontal beam spread angle of medium intensity obstruction lights is 360°.

Installation characteristics of medium intensity aviation obstruction lights

3. High intensity obstruction lights

The characteristics of high-intensity obstruction lights should meet the requirements of Table 4 and Table 6.

The horizontal beam spread angle of the high-intensity obstruction light is 90° or 120°, and multiple lamps can be used for 360° horizontal coverage.

Flashing requirements for aviation obstruction lights

Synchronous flashing and sequential flashing are the two flashing methods of aviation obstruction lights. As a special civil airport lighting, aviation obstruction lights are limited by relevant standards and specifications in terms of production technology, installation options, and flashing methods.

1. Synchronous flash

All lamps of the obstruction light lighting system composed of type B medium intensity, type A medium intensity or type A high-strength aviation obstruction lights or obstruction light lighting system composed of type A medium intensity or type A high intensity obstruction lights flash in sequence The difference should not be more than 1/60 second.

2. sequential flash

Sequential flash should meet the following conditions:

1. The obstruction light system of the sign catenary supporting structure composed of B-type high-intensity, A-type medium-intensity or B-type medium-intensity obstruction lights shall flash in sequence;

2. The system should install three layers of obstruction lights near each supporting structure: one layer is close to the top, one layer is at the height of the bottom or the low point of the catenary, and one layer is between the two;

3. The order of flashing should be middle layer, top layer, bottom layer;

4. Maintenance

Pre-terminated quick connect cables with twist-lock plugs reduce installation error and enable troubleshooting flexibility

  • Remote firmware upgrades can update boards on the tower as well as the ground, reducing the need for truck rolls and tower climbs

  • Local mode override at each light unit speeds up troubleshooting

5. Standard

All kinds of aviation obstruction lights should be ICAO(International Civil Aviation Organization) or FAA(Federal Aviation Administration) compliant. ICAO FAA both have a standard regarding all kinds of aviation obstruction lights, all lights should be designed and installed according to ICAO or FAA standard. In China, the standard is called “CAAC”(Civil Aviation Administration of China). All kinds of aviation obstruction lights should be compliant with CAAC when they are sold.

5.1 High intensity type B light, International Civil Aviation Organization, annex 14, volume 1, 7th edition, “airport design and operation”, July 2016, table 6.3.
